I pre-ordered the CD issue on Amazon. Dead site charges shipping+tax and ends up a bit too much. I'm on the fence whether to get download instead and can bail on the Amazon deal. Usually the Dead downloads have a bit higher DR and all mine are superb. Lately though I've been buying SACD etc to get a hard copy of what I'm buying instead of download. Finally got around to doing a more detailed comparison of the HDTracks Court & Spark to the DCC disc our host mastered in the '90s.
It's slightly compressed and a bit louder. The presentation is more forward. The midrange is hotter - sonically it's more in line now with The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. The newer master definitely feels cleaner and more natural in some ways, perhaps owing to 20 years of advances in A/D converters and the higher (24/96) resolution. The DCC edition is almost certainly a more enjoyable listen though, mellower and richer. The midrange harshness is tamed, which in turn helps to hide a few overloads on the original master that are all-too-apparent on the high res edition. I would love to hear the high res version EQ'd like the DCC.
Click to expand. Not sure what you mean. The Hi-Res vendors get the files via internet, either in WAV, AIFF or usually FLAC format. WAV, AIFF and FLAC are lossless formats. FLAC is losslessly compressed (like an archive ZIP or RAR file) and can be converted to WAV or AIFF back and forth without any loss of sound quality.
If you paid for lossless files, you should get lossless files; whether they are in WAV, AIFF or FLAC (or APE or ALAC) format is pretty much irrelevant. Losslessly compressed formats will take less space on your hard drive and less time to download, that's the only difference. Click to expand.Yes, this was an exciting find for me too. Some of these fetch very high prices on the collectible market for the original vinyl. I was delighted at how good the first two Cosmic Jokers albums were (I had never heard them before), even though the artists involved were exploited and never approved their cosmic music/krautrock jam sessions being recorded and released. It would be fabulous if the entire Ohr catalog were remastered and released this way, minus a few items - I suppose the more famous artists (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Temple, Klaus Schulze) have long since acquired or transferred the publishing rights to their early recordings to other labels.
